I have a friend and we're trying to figure out what to do with his 1990 Go Prizm. He wants all new speakers and a new radio. We have a radio that will fit and work, all the wires have been traced. The only thing is the rear speakers. The original mounts for the rear deck speakers are not there anymore. The previous owner has some speaker housings that do not fit and are not mounted to the deck at all. The deck is not flat and it has very small wholes in the middle. So there's no room to mount a free standing speaker, you need some kind of box or mount.
I'm looking for the OEM mounts but I haven't been able to find them. I've also been looking for an aftermarket solution but I don't see anything that would fit there because it's not flat. It would have to be some kind of box that sits on top the deck with the speakers in it. Whoever designed this should be tarred and feathered!
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get a set of speakers in this car? I think it's the same as a Toyota Corrola. Any experience?
I would try and see if it's at all possible to cut the rear deck first! you said that you looked though and it won't work! so my next suggestion is too possibly get some 6x9 speaker boxes and mount them to the top of the deck and then put the speakers in! if you don't mount them, more than likely they'll move around the rear deck and that would not be cool! the problem with that is that it won't look to aesthetically good! in other words it might look kind of like a hack job. it's a 4 door vehicle right, so why not try putting some speakers in the rear doors!!

Thanx for the reply. I found some pics of the original speaker pods that went there and they don't look good either. I'm currently looking at local junk yards to see if someone has a pair so we can just get a stock set and use the original sized speakers. I don't really want to cut the deck because it's too much work and it's not my car. The car doesn't have rear door speakers so it would have to be custom as well. Oh well, if I can't find the original pods, we may have to just do a jack job. He doesn't want to put the money into it and I don't want to put the time into it.
Fabricate some adapters yourself out of MDF. Based on the size of the hole, determine what the largest speaker you can fit back there and get to work! You'll want to coat the wood with something to keep moisture out, and you'll want to seal the wood to the rear deck to prevent air leakage = better bass response. I used bedliner in a can to cover the wood, and two-sided tape to seal the adapter to my door panel. Then you just use the speaker grills that came with them!

Thanx for the advise, but I was able to find the OEM speaker mounts for the rear deck at a junk yard right up the street from me for $10! So he was able to get new speakers and have them mounted properly without an expensive, time consuming, or obstrusive set up. Just wanted to post back.
