i have a custom tuned 40 htz box for 4 cvrs that i bought from a guy. well the box sounds awesome but im runnin 1300 rms to the box and it cant take it. its starting to crack the wood glue and the screws are popping out. how should i resupport this? 2x3's? also how many internal braces should i use and what adhesive, liquid nail? the dimmensions are 59 wide 19 tall and 17 deep

Sounds like it was very poorly constructed and not properly braced. You might be able to save it with external bracing, and re-seal the seams using silicone caulk. Is it made from 3/4" MDF? ------------- Support the12volt.com

yes it is made from 3/4. it sounded awesome when i only put 3oo watts to it but i got a new jifonics amp and it is not made for high power i guess. the guy that sold it to me competed in the low watt class. how do i do external bracing? i was gonna put maybe 2x3's on the seams and like 1 or 2 going across the box. is silicone the best application for the seams? and will it work with wood glue already in there?

sounds like a very poorly constructed enclosure...you can try gluing 2x2's along the inner seams along with clamps to help bond the joints together...I'd try using dowel rod for inner bracing though

well today i redid the box. i used 2 2x4s to go across the inside of the box and used a couple 1x4s to help support the seams. and then i used silicone on most the joints. also i put a 1x1 peice on where the port is because its just one 3/4 board. so i helped it out. that wont make any port noise will it? thanks for everyones input. i hope this mod hjelps out and keeps it strong. also will sprayin it with that bedliner stuff make it hold together any better? its not covered at al right now.

If the box wasn't covered why didn't you just take it apart measure each panel and duplicate the box with 1in mdf.since you like the way it sounds.

i had a custom made box made. and before the carpet was on i checked it out. not everyone takes pride in their work. next time you have a box made check it out before they carpet it. and if you dont know what to look for ask in these forums etc.

Construction adhesive works great. Sold in caulking type tubes at most hardware stores. For mega watt systems I use double wall constuction with overlapping joints. If your box is still quite solid, you can build a box outside of your box. Don't forget that internal bracing is great but reduce it from the box volume calculation for correct tuning. ------------- Prepare your future. I would do it different. Someone up above in this thread has keyed on it already. Reinforce the box. Take out the screws, redrill for longer ones and hand tighten. Do not over tighten. Use some more glue in those places. Add bracing on the inside to keep the large surfaces of the box from flexing, the more the flex, the more the pressure on the joints. Add fibreglass to the seams on the inside, 2 layers is more than enough. At least 2" to each side of the seam, so you will have strips 4" wide and who knows how long. This will make the seam both airtight and far stonger. Rough up the mdf on the inside of the box in the seam area so that the resin and matting will have more to stick to. Next, if your sub box is not mounted properly, get it mounted properly. If it is moving and crashing around, it is only a matter of time before it comes apart or takes your head off in a accident. ------------- Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
