Hi ... first time user here at the forum though I’ve been reading posts for about a week, maybe two. I’m also new to car audio systems and this is my first time installing a stereo.

I am going to replace the stereo, speakers, and speaker wire in my ’93 Lumina. During my planning I encountered two extra unidentified wires in my dash. I have identified the wires for the speakers, the ground, constant power, switched power, dimmer, illumination, and power antenna. In short, I'd like some help with what these 'extra' unidentified wires are for and what I should do with them.

The factory stereo was recently replaced with a unit that had been sitting in my garage for many years and no longer works. This unit was installed without a harness. (I now have the appropriate wire harness/adapter. However, I have decided not to use it because I would rather not reconnect all the factory wiring, I am replacing the speaker wire anyways, and with the harness there would be an overabundance of wire length in the dash.) When the first upgrade was installed, the two 'extra' wires were not cut and are still attached to the same factory connector. They are the only wires on this connector. The spot for it in the wire harness/adapter has no wires extending from the opposite side to connect to the stereo harness. It appears that it may be useless, but I’m not certain of it. I simply can't think of anything that would be useful to a factory stereo and not an after market one. But, I admittedly know very little on this subject.

Any guesses as to the purpose of the two extra wires? Or are they useless?

Should I simply leave it as is in the factory connector? Or cut them and close them with a connector or something? If so, I plan to use one butt splice for each wire and crimp both ends to seal it off – will that work?

Any help figuring this out will be much appreciated. I just want my first install to go smoothly and not create more problems than my current problem – no music!

Thanks for reading and I hope I didn’t give you too much unnecessary info.

Are these two mysterious wires a brown and a gray (memory) in a black plug? These are parking light and dash dimmer.

Seeing that you're not using OEM wiring anyways, just use the OEM B+(orange), ACC (yellow - there are two yellows, the other is rear speaker) and ground (black) and tape all the rest making sure they cannot short to each other and to chassis.
