How can I mount a piece of plexiglass on an amp rack to give it a professional look? I would like something like a bandpass box you can buy but I want to build it myself for my amps, and I don't want to pay $150 for a box I'm going to rip apart. Anyone have any ideas? bberman1 posted this in the general discussion group but didn't get any replys so I'm trying here. Thanks,
Allan.
What I have done in the past is make the frame work out of 3/4" MDF and cut out the amp dimensions on the MDF then router an edge about 1/4 - 1/2 " ( depending on what you want for plexiglass ). I cut the plexiglass to fit inside this window and use double sided tape to fasten it to the frame. Afterwards, I get some 3M vinyl ( I usually use black ) cut to frame the outside edges so you can't see the double sided tape through the plexiglass.

How do you get the cut in the vinyl so it dosn't look like crap? I thought about using something for the edge or painting it but either way I dont think I can get a straight enough edge. The other option I wasthinking was to carpet the outer wall, then mount pleiglass from the inside so the only edge is the wood edge, which is carpeted. Or I would router the internal edge out instead of the external and do the same, carpet and put plexi from inside. If I make a large enough router groove I could even use those things you use on screen doors or storm windows to keep the plexi in, that can easily be unscrewed to drop the plexi out. Sooooo...what about those options. Also what about having the ability to easily open a section for a EQ, I was looking at the AudioControl EQS 6-channel equalizer but I would want to tweak it while in the rack, not have everything disassembled while tweaking.
On a second note I haven't seen any pictures of any cars with what I want already installed, which I guess means at least mine will be original.

Anyone have links to other installs or car shows with lots of pictures? I've looked at a bunch already but I could use more to look at.

Hey Allan, I go down to my local sign shop and get them to use their computer plotter to make the edging on the plexiglass. Also, if you don't have a local sign shop what you can do is mask the area that you want to be able to see through with masking tape and the area that you want hidden will be exposed. Now take some primer & paint and finish the sides of the plexiglass this way. Use a flat black paint and it will match almost any interior. I suggest using the vinyl because you can always change up the colors or the width of the material but the paint is permanent.

I think I've figured out a really original idea on how to mount the plexi that will not only look good but be easy to remove for any changes, without having the edges done. Once I build it I'll let you all know how it comes out if your interested.
