I have been around car audio for some time. But I have a strange issue and wondering if anyone has had the same issue. From what I can tell the Polk Audio crossovers just overheat from extended play. Have not had this issue with Image Dynamics, Quart, JL and even some alpine. I have gone through two sets and the issue is the same. You can see the Xovers are "melted" on the back side. I am POSTIVE I am not overdriving as I scoped the output and adjusted my gain to limit the output. I love to hang out at the lake and let my music play for about 3 -6 hours straight. My only concern is I am using the newer "digital" PDX ine from Alpine. Wondering if that could be a reason this is occuring? Or can these xovers just not handle 110 watts for extended play times?

Anyone?

P.S. Here my equipment listing:

Alpine PDX-4.150 - birth sheet shows 784 Watts RMS
Alpine PDX-1.1000 - birth sheet shows 1202 Watts RMS
Alpine 9886 Head unit with IPOD, SAT and USB initerface(s)
Alpine RF Remote Wireless / Waterproof
Polk Momo MMC6500 x 4 - 125 Watts each RMS
Image Dynamics IDMAX V3 12 & Custom Sub Box - 1000 watts RMS

Amp Installation Kit - boat ready
Dist Blocks  x2
In Line Fuse Holder with voltage meter x 1
Signal Patch Cords x 3
Speaker Wire 100 Foot oxygen free - 14
Sub Wire - 40 foot 12 G
Connectors - Misc

240 AH house battery as my secondary battery.

Have you taken one of the crossovers apart to see what is melted? Or what caused so much heat that it melted the back cover? If they are fully enclosed and they are mounted where nothing can get inside them, have you tried playing them without the cover? This will let heat escape from the enclosure.

What did you mount them to?

Man, I think I found the issue. On the back of my Xovers it states MMC6500 (sticker). On the Xover itself (screen printed) on the board it shows MMC5250. This make perfect sense. I am hitting them with about 110 - 115 watts . . . the drivers handle this (as they should) with 0 distortion, but the xovers overheat from to much wattage as they are only rated for 100 watts. I am going to shoot someone with a pea shooter! LOL  What a PIA!

I also read in another post that someone had the same issue. What is up with Polk?

They may use the same crossover for both sets of speakers.  What exactly is getting hot on the bottom of the board?

White line the plastic split open.

Yellow line shows MMC5250

Red line is to  closet components to melted spot on back of Xover.

A lot of these crossovers need a bit more solder on the connections to the board.  The components look to be fine.  I would check the solder connections and maybe resolder them.

The plastic is melted on the back of the xover . . . the xovers seem really weak. The speakers appear to be fine if I move them to a different xover they sound fine. I know I read elsewhere someone else stated a similar issue.

The resistor could be replaced with a 20W if this is where the problem is. Looks like plenty of space available. It blows my mind seeing 5W and smaller on the Focal stuff.

Kicker had the ND-20 Tweeter Set back when. It had the light bulb protection circuit built into a resin sealed clear case. Many came back melted.
