Subject: capacitor displays 12.8 volts, but displa

I have a 5 Farad capacitor from Soundstream. It has a built in distribution block and voltage & current display. I am not getting any power to my car pc and 2 amplifiers. It displays on the capacitor 12.8 volts and 0 AMP current. What does this mean? Can the capacitor be blown and what may be the cause? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

Is there a fuse between the amp and the capacitor? If so you need to check it with a meter or change it.

Thanks for the reply.  There is no fuse between the capacitor and the ampilifers.  There is a fuse between the battery and the capacitor which is still good.

If this helps any, the capactor has a funny burnt smell.  I am think its a blown capacitor causing an incomplete circuit which explains why the capacitor displays 12.8 voltage but displays 0 AMP current.  Why could cause a capacitor to blow is what I am wondering.

Voltage surges, current surges, overtemp... Those are the things I know of that can cause one to blow.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Caps are an interesting subject around here. You might want to take a look at the topic "capacitor" and see if your cap is worth replacing.
