I posted earlier about a light dimming problem when playing my radio. I took your advice and changed my ground to 4 ga., but I'm still having a dimming problem. I found a 140 amp altenator, what kind of changes do I have to make to my elec. system to run a higher amperage altenator. I have a 1994 GMC S-15 Jimmy, 4.3 V-6 with A/C and all power options. Thanks in advance.
The size of the alternator will depend on how many watts your system is. As far as changes to your electrical system the only one you should need to make is the alternator and possibly the regulator depending on the manufacture. However it’s also a good idea to run a larger gauge cables from the high out put alternator to the battery. I would suggest contacting
https://www.wranglernw.com or
https://www.mralternator.com they can assist you in finding the correct alternator for your truck. I have dealt with both companies in the past and highly recommend either one.
If you can find a good alternator shop they should be able to pull about 180 amps out of a small case delco alt. like yours. I had one done up and had it metered in front of me. I used a place called Hite Part Exchange in columbus ohio. Toll free number is 800 686 0043. You also should use a second deep cycle battery. Your big dog alternator will need a place to store all of that juice. Youneed the second battery as a storage bin for the power because the alternator can't handle the demands and fluxuations of current in you system by itself.
