I had a jvc kd-abt22 running a system consisting of a polk momo c400.4 and c500.1 as well as mmc6500's and mmc650's. My sub is a sr124. I have had this system for some time and I dont have any alternator noise of any kind. All my grounds are at the same spot in the trunk by them amps. I have run 12 gauge power and ground wires from my tsunami 40 farad cap in the back to the front and I my headunit has its power and ground from there. Again, this was setup for a very long time this way and zero alternator noise even with the volume upto 50 because I ahve eliminated any chance of a ground loop. The car is a 2006 acura rsx typs s.
Now that I have given you some background, here is the problem. Two days ago, I purchased a jvc KT-HD300 hd radio adapter for use with the kd-abt22. It required a constant power and ground connection so I took that from the 12 gauge wires that I have run from the cap and that my HU is wired to. I am having very serious alternator whine ONLY WHEN listening to HD radio. It is present at idle and increases with RPM's. It is terrible. I know my connections are secure. I initially thought that it was because I stored the hd box near the ignition wires under the steering wheel so I moved it to underneath the glove compartment. The noise has not gone away and is there as before. I was hoping someone that has used this box could enlighten me. I dont know what to do and I hope that someone could help me. Thanks
I don't know the HD receiver you installed but it is the obvious culprit. I'd suggest grounding it in a different location, try connecting a ground wire directly between the HD receiver and your HU, and make sure the radio antenna is properly grounded. If this is an inherent problem with that receiver, however, there will be nothing you can do about it.
This has nothing to do with your alternator whine, but 12 gauge power wire is pretty small. What is the total wattage of your amplifiers?

Support the12volt.comThanks DYOHN for your reply. I have 0 gauge wire running from my battery to a tsunami 40 farad cap in my trunk. The cap has a built in distro block. From there I have 4 gauge running to my amplifiers. I then took 2 12 gauge wires and ran them as ground and power to the front of my car for the headunits power and ground. Everything is taking power and ground from the tsunami cap's distro block. I have never had alternator whine except when I added the hd radio adapter and i only have the whine when listening to hd. I don't know what to do. Is it possible that jvc really put this out defective? Would it be worth going out and getting another hd adapter on ebay?
Ah good, I thought you were saying you powered your amps with 12 gauge. Glad to see that's not the case.
JVC gear can be very marginal quality, but I'd first try re-grounding the HD receiver and the vehicle's antenna, and also try connecting a wire (any gauge) from the HD receiver case to the head unit case. Just put something between them temporarily to see if it helps and if it does you can do something more permanent.

Support the12volt.comOk,I will try to run a wire from the hd adapters chassis to that of the headunit. It is certainl worth a shot. I don't have high hopes for this and I will probably try to sell the radio. I probably will have to end up getting a new headunit and I will stay away from jvc in the future. This jvc reciever behaves more like a jensen headunit and that is not good. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
