I just installed a new Pioneer ts-w307d2 and everytime I crank it up loud I get the wierd smell comming from the sub.  I'm am using a Kenwood amp that is rated at 460 x 2 RMS amp and the sub is rated at 400 watt RMS.  The gain on the amp it a little less that 3/4 the way up.  It sound great  and everything but I'm just woried about the smell.  Could this be because its new?

Sounds like the sub is over-driven.

Is your amp rated at 460 watts times 2 channels?  Or is it rated at 460 watts into 2 ohms?

The only time I have smelled a burning smell coming from a woofer enclosure was when the woofers were being severely overdriven.  As already stated.

I love the smell of fried voice coils in the morning.

I always heard that smell was just the surround on the subwoofer like stretching I guess?  Would it really be the voice coils, etc.  I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to subwoofer parts.

sounds wierd, but i'm familiar with that smell. it's not burning, isn't just the new sub getting broken in.

just like a new car, it'll go away after a while. mmm new sub

Occasionally if too much adhesive is used when attaching the voice coil former to the cone of the woofer it can heat up and burn off causing quite an odor. But, more often than not it is like most people already said a sub being over driven.
