some of you werent more then a blink of an eye in '79 but i recently purchased a 1979 corvette with the original ac delco am fm stereo. what were the ohms on this stereo for the year? ive been told front 4x6 are 8ohm and rear 6x9 are 10ohm. i want to get it right with replacement speakers as there were only a handfull of these cars made with this stereo for 79 and i dont want it to burn up. thanks!

Are the original speakers still in the vehicle?  Most GM speakers have the impedance printed on the back of the magnet.

Life moves pretty fast; if you don't stop and look around once in a while; you could miss it.

UNFORTUNATELY the rear ones were lost a long time ago. the fronts are there and im sure the ohm reading is on the magnet just havnt popped em out yet. just figured we had a long time GM guy/gal in here that would know.

i miss my days of rather large sound systems and modern conveniences

if im reading this diagram correctly it shows they are 10ohm speakers but of course it shows no date. so finding older 10 ohm speakers should be fun. or maybe run (5) 2 ohms in series.

You will have no problems if you upgrade the speakers to a 4 ohm speaker.

I'm a an old GM guy. The 6x9 rear speakers in those days were usually really cheap 10 ohm single cone ones. The front's were usually 4-8 ohm 4x6 ones. You may be able to find some 10 ohm GM dual cone 6x9 if you search hard enough. Remember though that these speakers will be very old and may be dried out and past their prime. There are many Corvette swap meets that you may be able to get them from. I don't suggest that you run four 4 ohm speakers on the original deck as it will load it down too much. Those cars weren't set up for good sound.

Every GM vehicle built in that era had 10 ohm speakers. I can not count the number of 4 ohm speakers that I, myself put in GM vehicles back then.

exactly-- they certainly arent competition systems back then. I just wanted to be able to have the radio play and not burn it out. so the 10 OHm search is on. thanks for the help!
