Alright, this is my first subwoofer install.
Here's the equipment:
1999 Toyota Avalon
Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X592 Headunit
2 12" alpine type R subs (wired at 1ohm I think- I followed a diagram on this site but when I put a volt meter on it it would fluctuate and not give me a real reading)
Hifonics TXi 1008D amp (1 ohm stable)
So here's what I did- I connected all the necessary wires I got in an amp kit. The power light on the amp was not on, but I figured I needed to turn it on via the headunit. I couldn't find the setting o turn it on, but turned the headunit's amp off and faintly heard bass from my trunk (car door speakers were not working of course). I had the bass knob that comes with amp maxed and turned the volume up pretty high, but the subs really weren't too loud. Then it cut off and I turned it off and went to look in the trunk and there was a bit of smoke coming from the amp. I disconnected the +12v wire and here I am on this site.
All the settings on the amp looked like the ones here https://sonicelectrnix.com/item_9551_Hifonics+TXi+1008D.html# when you click to see more images. Except for the level which I set to around 4 because I have 4v preamp outputs.
Thanks in advance for any help

Define a BIT of smoke. Chances are the power supply of the amp has went out. Usually this will produce lots of smoke. Some occasions not so much smoke. If Sonic offers any kind of warranty on their products you really need to send it back to them. It could cost near as much as you paid for it to get it repaired.

I mean like my trunk wasn't filled with smoke, there was probably about the same amount as if you lit half a sheet of paper on fire. What did I do wrong though or was it defective?

I love posts like this. "Hey, my amp is smoking, do you think there's something wrong?" Yes, there is something wrong. Please go to a professional installer and get your system checked out and installed correctly before you burn the car down. Thanks. ------------- Support the12volt.com

I have no idea if the amp was defective or if there was a problem with the install. We were not there to inspect the install. With that much smoke, the power supply is out and possibly shorted output transistors caused it. It will be expensive to repair it

Sorry for trying to get into a new hobby.
I obviously know that something is wrong, I just wanted to know if anything jumped as a problem. Never mind though, I'll get help elsewhere.

A perfect example of someone letting the magic smoke out. Can't put it back in!
------------- It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

It can be put back in, it is just costly in those amplifiers. Not many people understand that amps run on smoke. They are all under the false impression that they run off of electricity. This is not true. The reason I know they run on smoke is that, if you let all of the smoke out, they quit working.
