My set up right now is 3 JL 12W3v2's they are dual two ohm. My question is what is the best amplifier for this set up, I would like to have decent sound quality not just pure power. Brands that I've been looking into are jbl, jl audo, memphis and a few others. I'd like to hear about amps in the range of $500-$1000 or around there. Also has anybody heard of running an amp at three ohms? I'm asking because I found a subwoofer wiring diagram on a web site (crutchfield.com) that would allow me to wire them at 3 ohms. If that doesn't work, my only other option is to wire them at 1.3 ohms which would then require me to have a 1 ohm stable amp. thanks in advance for any and all help. ------------- Bert Pages

Why do you think it's odd to run an amp at 3 ohms? 3 ohms will be perfectly fine... Any 2 ohm stable amp will have no issues with that.
Consider SERIOUSLY the Alpine PDX1.1000. That'd be a perfect match for those three woofers, and it makes the same power at 4 or 2 ohms, so, it stands to reason that it would be fine at 3 ohms, as well. Mine birthsheeted at 1176WRMS, and it sounds fantastic. LOTS of control - surprising considering it's a Class D amp - damping isn't a strong suit of Class D, generally speaking.
It'll probably set you back right down the middle of your figures... I see them selling for about 750 or so.

thanks for the suggestion, but I've heard a lot of negative stuff about that amp, such as running very hot, and being a bit weak for a 1000watt amp. plus the thing is the size of my hand. the very small size makes me think that it just isn't that substantial (meaning there ain't much inside warranting a $800 price tag). Any other suggestions anyone.

Don't let the small size of the Alpine sway you one way or the other. That being said, forget that amp. Most of the compact digital amps like that on the market, with the exception of the JL HD amps, all use the same technology contracted from the same company. So whether you get an Alpine PDX, or some other "compact digital" amp, you're buyin' essentially the same thing. I'd stick with a high power, such as a JL 1000/1. With your price range of $500 - $1000 you're right in there. I wouldn't get too over zealous with the power because the 12W3v2-2 are not power hungry. IMHO.

The Alpine PDX amps shouldn't be taken lightly.
In no way is that amp weak on subs!
A PDX1.1000 on a RE SE 12" and found
it to be a potent little amp. It did get hot,
never shut down!

I third the recommendation for the Alpine PDX series. Best sounding subwoofer amplifier in its price range that I have heard in many years. Small and light because of the ICEpower module, not because it is cheaply built. And the only "problems" I have heard about with them was because of user error: trying to operate them into too low an impedance load. ------------- Support the12volt.com

actually you are the same guy from the first alpine post. so why don' t you stop posting . you recommended the alpine amp twice, under different screen names so you are officially an alpine fanboy. you are probably a stock holder or somthing. stop posting about alpine you friggin ameoba.

bigdog... You are simply wrong. DYohn is a moderator, (and you might just pay attention to the "rookie" under your name, the "Platinum" under mine, and the "Moderator" under DYohn's, well before you start chastising... Not good to try and "shut down" a mod like that if you want to keep your membership...) I am just a regular guy on the board, just like you, man... He and I really DO believe that amp is everything it claims to be, I truly do have one. (actually, I have three... A 1.1000, and two 4.150 models... FANTASTIC amps. I will tell you right now, when you ask for SQ, I think that between DYohn and I, we might have the votes here for advice regarding it...)
It does run hot. I admit that. ANY 1000 watt amplifier with the small heat sink like the Alpine has will run warm. It's square. It's flat. There are NO fins. A surface like that dissipating 200 watts or more WILL get warm... It's gonna happen. I have a black car, and I live in Bakersfield, California, where the temps in the summer regularly run over 100 to 105 degrees. It has never shut down on me even once.
All that (again) being said... Check your attitude at the door, and listen to the advice being given... The advice YOU asked for. The advice that is being given freely and with actual EXPERIENCE behind it. I'm done with you, You asked, I answered, and I will stand behind my recommendation of the PDX amps.
