well i need an amp to power a sub. im going to get a 12" JL 12w3v3. i need an amp to match it. It has an impedance of 4 ohms and i would like 500 watts to power it. my price range is up to $300. im looking for something that is made well and will power the JL nicely. space is not an issue. i appreciate any help u guys can provide and look forward to reading ur responses especially those from DYohn, and haemphyst. u guys are human libraries.

heres the link to the subwoofer i plan on getting. JL 12W3v3 i believe the final impedance is 4 ohms.

First, thank you for the compliment. Second, I'm not really sure about the total cost of the Alpine PDX 1.600, but I bet you can get one of those at (or near) that price... Might be a bit more power than you really want, but a PDX 2.150 will bridge to 300RMS (easily), which is pretty close to what you want. 400 is probably easily acheiveable with it in bridge mode. That one should fit your budget pretty nicely. Maybe a little bit more.

well im worried about the Alpine PDX 1.600 having too much power. what is ur opinion on Kenwood amps. i found the Kenwood KAC-9104D and it produces 500 watts at 4 ohms. it sounds perfect but i dont no aynthing abt Kenwood. so i figured id pick ur brain.
Also, would u recommend a capacitor for this application?

I personally am a fan of a huge amplifier, simply because it allows me to not put as much thermal strain on the components. That being said, I repair Circuit cards in Moving Lights these days, so I always think about the little green cards... ------------- Greed is for amateurs.

Set your gains correctly and there shouldn't be a problem. The sensitivity knob is not a gain knob. If your amp sensitivity is .25V and this is the correct setting, the knob might be "all the way up".

If an amp, component, is designed correctly and installed correctly it should withstand the duty it was designed for. Unless extreme conditions exist, thermal duty should have little to do with selection.

We are a JL dealer so I have quite a bit of experience with thier subs. Currently our most popular set up is the 12W3v3 with a TMA 500.1 amp. We drop the 12W3v3 at 2ohms with the 500.1 all the time in sealed and ported enclosures and it sounds absolutely great. One thing I like about the JL designed amps, e.g. TMA, is that the remote knob gives you an incredible range of output. I hated the Rockfords knob because from the extreme low setting to the extreme high setting you could barely notice a difference in bass output. With the JL and TMA amps, you can turn the bass almost completely off, or drive your ears into oblivion. I'd also say try the JL G1700, but it's a little out of your price range at around $350.

so do u start with a component 12W3v3 to get it down to 2 ohms? also how much do the TMA 500.1 amps run? i checked them out and i love the remote bass control. my buddy has that and i love being able to adjust how much bass.

A Rockford fosgate T3002 will give you anywhere from 600-800wrms and they are less than 200$. you can find them on ebay for less than 150$ ------------- I can't hear you!
