I want to install a second battery using an isolator.  Does this lower the lifespan of the alternator.  I will play the stereo with the engine off in a modest system.

Anytime you add anything that needs to be powered by your stock alternator, you are putting a strain on it. This includes amps, batteries, power caps, winches, power inverters, hids, ejector seats...you know, the usual. Engine off, however, you are never gonna hurt your alternator, unless you beat it with a hammer.

What kinda stuff do you have in your unknown vehicle?
