So, this afternoon I bought my wife a '00 Mitsubishi Galant. The stereo didn't work because it had lost power and needed the security code entered. We got home and I fixed that.

Now the HU powers on and appears to be playing (CD timer is counting) but there is no sound whatsoever, radio nor CD.

I checked the connections at the Infinity amp under the seat and they seem fine. I checked the fuse in the cabin fuse panel that is marked with a musical note symbol. This must be the amp fuse and not the HU fuse because I can remove it w/o losing power to the HU. Unfortunately, they only used symbols and not words on the fuse chart... Anyways, everything looks fine and shows no signs of ever being messed with (no scratches from screwdrivers etc) but I've got nothing.

What should I check next?

One thing I noticed is that when I turn the volume knob on the HU the display does not change. It doesn't display any graphic to indicate the volume level. I'm not sure if there's supposed to be one. Hopefully, someone has experience with this system and can verify this... perhaps I have a faulty knob? Long shot maybe.

Any help would be appreciated.

either one of two things, radio or amp. Only really way to check is hook up a tone generator before the amp and test it. If still no sound then its the amp. If there is sound then its the radio.

check all fuses in the vehicle.  The manufacturers use other circuits for the stereo as well.  You could have another blown fuse either in the interior fuse panel or the panel under the hood.

I'm going to say something stupid........ are speakers actually in the the car and do they really work???  You did buy the car used and no telling what the previous owner did with them.

Did you use the amp integration harness (the one with the round black plug)?

Nevermind, I re-read and it seems you're still using the factory radio

'Cept that's gonna be tough to do... He's got a factory amp!

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

I've tested factory amps with a tone generotar without any problems. I'm not using a 9v, I'm actually using a tone generator thus it won't damage the amp. Just has to make sure the factory amp is powered on.

Sure... But how many people have the requisite equipment to do that with a factory amp? Not all of us! Thus the "difficulty", not the "impossibility". posted_image

chances are high its the amp thats bad, ive seen that car too many times take in water (just a little) the amp gets a little wet and poof  the amps dead,

as for the tone generator in that application it wont work unless he cuts the black plug and starts probing wires After turning on the amp through that plug also, chances are hes not gonna do this, BUT lets say he were to test the amp and he finds out the amp is good now hes gonna have to rewire that plug which is a nightmare cause the wires are super thin and then buy an new factory radio, dont do it, its wack and the whole test is a waste of time...buy your wife a new radio and rewire that amp, itll sound better and save you the time again when that amp goes bad becuase they always go bad..also like someone saId before, pop open the trunk and make sure the car has speakers...

Sounds good. Not only do I not have a tone generator.. (would a small speaker work in its place to test the wires?) but you make another good point... if the amp is good and the deck is bad then there's no way in hell I'm going to try to use that deck with an aftermarket amp.

I'll try all the fuses and if I get nothing I'll put in an aftermarket deck. I think I have a Kenwood with MP3 around here somewhere...

There are indeed speakers. The car is in EXCELLENT condition. 80k miles on it and the thing is spotless which also makes me doubt that it ever had water in it.
