Which type of enclosure, sealed or ported, works best for these subs?

There is no best...depends on application and install.

I've always used them in a sealed box. I was wondering if they would work OK in a 85 Supra in a ported box.

i have had both a "4 cvr 12s" and a "2 cvr 12s" setup and the first box was 2.84 cubic feet per chamber ported and thats what the shopguy who built it said was the optimal size for spl. and let me tell you that cvrs never sounded so good in a ported box that size lol. it was tuned at 38htz also.
