Hey I have one Alpine Type-R in about a 2.5-ish cube foot ported box with a 500 w Alpine; the box was designed on WinISD and I really like it. I'm one to never be satisfied so i'm always looking for something new. Well to the topic: My type r sounds great to me. I just want to be one of those guys who has a small amount of wattage and a small sub, but big sound. Does that make sense? If possible I would like my new little sub little amp set-up to be same amount of money/cheaper than my current set-up. Also WinISD estimated about a steady 110ish dbs across the board. (I'd know more exact numbers, but my computer is getting fixed so i'm on a buddie's comp) I'm not looking for an 8" to hit ridiculous dbs or anything. Just looking for a unique set up (sub/box combo) that involves a small sub and a small box that hits about as hard as my Alpine 12" and costs the same/less. Thanks in advance guys. ------------- Sasquatch...

Hoffman's iron law states that you can have two, but never all three between high output, high efficiency, and a small enclosure. You MUST give up one to get the other two. Do you want high output in a small box? Then you will need a lot of power to do it.
An 8" or 10" sub that can keep up with a 12 probably isn't going to be cheap. Unfortunately you are going to have to compromise somewhere.

an 8 or 10 inch sub can keep up with your 12" type r...but the enclosure is going to have to be huge...some kind of 6th order bandpass or horn loaded enclosure

really its not so much that you need a massive box or anything. you can find 8's that will hit nicely if you look hard enough but to get something thats gonna compete on the level of a type r 12 your probably going to be throwing down a good bit of cash. if your willing to throw it down then you could go with a jl 8w7 or for a bit less bass then the alpine you could go with a kicker 8L7 and with a ported box might be doing ok. thats just what i know
------------- Head Unit - Pioneer P80MP
Sub - 1 10" Soundstream T-5
Amps - 1 Kicker KX400.1, 1 Legacy crap 2 channel
Door Speakers - Audiobahn 600V Components
Box - Custom by Southern Sound in Statesboro, GA

Little speakers with little watts that can produce big sound? Try Tang Band 6.5" subs. Two in a vented enclosure @ 35Hz powered by 100 watts rock! When these little guys were in my car people kept asking me "Where are your subs?" ------------- Support the12volt.com

Would this little sub hit lows and be as loud as my Alpine? Waiting for computer to get fixed, don't have WinISD. ------------- Sasquatch...

These all look pretty cool. Would these have as good SQ as the Type R? I'm not just looking for straight high output. ------------- Sasquatch...

mcben789, this is the enclosure i had in my last car. little subs, big sound. 9 JL 6W0's in a custom fiberglass enclosure. it sounds absolutely incredible and is pretty small altogether. doesnt need a ton a power either. dont have this car anymore now, and i have a different setup. interested in buying the box sub's and all?? pretty cheap. just have the box repainted what ever color you want.

Peerless XLS 12"
Exodus Audio Shiva X 12"
Which one would be the better choice..
The Shiva should beat the Peerless in output, extension, and sound quality. However it does require a decent sized enclosure for optimum performance. So if you can spare the extra room, I would recommend that one. I run the Tempest-X in my home theater and love it. Of course I may be a little biased.

That set-up seems pretty sweet. Would I have good sound quality with those JL's, or would another woofer choice be good? Space for a box is not a problem and buying a strong amp wouldn't be a problem either. Thanks guys for all the replies. ------------- Sasquatch...

not trying to just sell a box here but, thay sound absolutely awesome! because they are a 6" subwoofer they are fast and quick. really tight. and with 9 of them you get way huge sound. dont get me wrong its nothing like hearing you a block away or anything like that. when i built that box i wasnt wanting that by any means, i was going for sound quality more than anything else but i was astounded at the output. does just as good as any pair of 10's or a single 12. and when i opened my trunk to show people that they were 6" subs, they freaked.

Okay I have a question... I've been looking at this thread-https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp~TID~92439~KW~how+many+subs~PN~0~TPN~1 So one Tang Band W6-1139SI 6-1/2" Subwoofer plugged into WinISD produces 91.03 dbs at 30 hz in 0.405 cubic foot box tuned to 38.33 hz with 50 watts of power. From reading the above thread, if I receive a 3 db increase as I double the size of the cone area of the subwoofer, would I receive a 15 db increase from say 20 hz to 100 hz across the board if I add 4 more woofers? Would it be 91 db + (3 db increase * # of woofers)--in my case 91 db + (3 db increase * 5 woofers) = 106 db's @ 30hz? Just a little confused..sorry I keep jumping around from idea to idea in this thread. |

I wouldn't really look at the spl numbers on WinISD...in real world install anywhere the response will not look anything like the graph.

yes, they are. on a side note, this box weighs a friggin ton. the front is overkill, i made it 1" thick and looking back now, that was a little overkill, but whats done is done.

But was my equation right about the 5 subs * 3 decibels = 15 decibel increase? And if those SPL numbers are not accurate, what should I expect out of the box I mentioned before? I'm just looking to know how many of these Tang Band 6.5 inch subs would I need to hit good low notes at a volume equal to my Type-R. ------------- Sasquatch...

what do you mean? i mean yea if you want a tiny subwoofer that will blow out your ear drums, then yea, but what is it your trying to do? you say you want a little sub that sounds good, fairly big output, and doesnt need a huge amplifier. there have been tons of suggestions on this thread for that by lots of guys, all correct i might add. you must want some ridiculous amount of output or something. ???

make a transmission line enclosure. the way a speaker sounds is mostly on the enclosure you give it

its all about the box and the car buddy. i built a small ported box for a pair of 6 inch digital audio subs that i found. when i played with it in a friends trunk it wasn't that loud, but when i stuck it in the backseat of a truck those 2 little subs rang my ears on certain notes.

Not really looking for ridiculous output. I really don't know what to do. I love my set up right now, but if I could find small subs that hit as hard as my Alpine Type-R and sounded just as good (basically equal) that's basically what I was looking for. A little hard to find I know, but that's what I am looking for.
