I once broke the rear window in my competition VW bug with about 128db.  The window popped right out of the gasket, slid down the back of the car and smashed on the ground.  DQ!  posted_image

To answer your question, still_walkin, glass - especially automotive safety glass - is very strong.  While windshields have been know to fracture in some comp vehicles with greater than 165dbSPL, it's probably more likely they broke from vibration or had a small crack before the run than it is that the sound pressure alone broke them.  To flex auto glass enough to break from SPL alone would probably require more than 180dbSPL.

well this is my knid of topic.   I have cracked the windshield in my 88 crx above 160 db.    and depending on the setup in some vehicles it is easy to destroy a windshield below 170db.

he are cideos of a van I was working on shortly before dbdrag finals.   Each time we broke the windshield we were upwards of 167DB. We broke 3 winsheilds in 1 week testing before finals

The main thing in breaking thw windshield is more or less the frequency used.    I was burping at mid to high 60 hz range, where the van uses a mid to low 50 hz range tone. I could see someone breaking a windsheild in the 150 db range if plaing something in the 30-40hz range

I dont know what happened to the links, it was just a copy and paste job.    I havent chimed in for quite awhile, as I have been my first year of retirement from SPL.    I will post more in the off topic section about what I have been up to.
