ive heard of people using an oscope to set the gain. i was wondering how that was done. how is the oscope not damaged from the massive amounts of current compared its conventional use to measure milliamps? does the installer visually look on the screen for clipping?

An oscilloscope measures voltage and time.  It can handle anything your amp can send it.  Yes you can see it on the screen when the signal begins to clip.
