i'm running a jl audio 1000/1v2 amp with a 12w6v2. i've never encountered this before when i was running it with my 500/1. can anyone tell me why this is and what i could possibly do?

hehe, i just read the title and started laughing and just had to read and see what all this was about! it just sounded funny and struck me funny posted_image

seriously though, the reason why "your sub smells when you bump it" ((lol) sorry), is that you are burning the voice coil inside, you probably dont notice because you dont hear any distortion from the speaker but you are slowly burning up the voice coil. wont be long before that baby's done and ready for a dumpster.

the 1000 is pulling more current. I dont think it is distortion alone. You could be clipping the amp slightly(causing distortion but at the same time when an amp clips it can send straight DC current to the sub). Did you upgrade your power wires? Have you done the big 3? try backing off the gain a bit that should help. Also check you volts when running it. If you are going below 12v look forward to buying a new amp and sub. If you dont address the voltage drop.

If you have a DMM you should disconnect the sub from your amp and check the resistance, by the sound of things the varnish that protects the nonisulated wire of the coil in your sub has gotten to hot and started to burn off, once thats happens like ckeeler said you have a very big paper weight

Too much power is the root cause of your problem. You can't just throw more power at a sub and expect it to take it. In your case, the comfort level of this particular JL sub is from 100 - 500w rms, above that you are asking for trouble. This has nothing to do with distortion or a big 3, it has everything to do with too much heat being generated by too much power. Change your sub to one that can handle the amps power output.
