I have a mtx 9512 woofer in a sealed box. i was wondering if i have the sub upside down (magnet being exposed)do i need to change the phase of the woofer. if so i have a setting on my headunit, would that be the best way?

Best way is to use the reverse switch on the amp.  If no switch exists on your amp, exchange wire polarity at either the amp output or the sub itself.  Leave it at the position where bass is loudest and deepest.

The installation method you are describing is known as inverted.

you can just flip the wires at the amp, but if you only have one sub then it really shouldn't make that much of a difference.
