grounded remote lead is it fried?

I was installing an alpine cda-9856 in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the factory infinity amp. I connected everything except the remote lead from the deck. I planned to find the turn-on lead for the factory amp once everything else was working. With the deck powered on, the remote lead accidentally touched the radio chassis (sparks and smoke ensued), and now the deck won't power on. The vehicle's radio fuse is good, and so is the 10amp fuse on the back of the deck. It has a burnt smell, so I'm assuming something fried on the board. I reconnected the factory deck and it works fine so it's definitely isolated to the new deck.

I only used the alpine for about 2 months in my old truck, then when I sold the truck, I put it in storage until I bought this jeep. I'd really hate to have to trash it since it's barely used. Is there any hope for it?

Don't scrap the radio for that. The problem may only be with a small component on the circuit board. Take it to a radio repair tech and have them look at it. It should be far less than a new radio.

I am not familiar with that model.  I agree with Sparkie in that it will be cheaper to get it repaired than replaced.  The only thing that could make it kind of costly is the fact that some of the newer radios have the remtote circuitry built into the output chip of the deck.  There is a good chance that there is a burnt trace on the bottom of the circuit board. There is a transistor in some decks that power the remote out.  If this would have been the case, chances are the radio would still come on.  If something smoked, chances are you should be able to find the problem.
