the question i have is x max is it measured by the full pos and neg from the neutral position of the sub or is it from the neutral position positive or neg? not polarity but position of the cone

Xmax is measured as two numbers. The first is listed as Xmax and is the linear number, and this is the measurement of {voice coil height, minus gap height, divided by 2} This is generally the number that will be shown in a T/S parameter list.

The second will generally be listed as Xmech, which is twice the length of the "bangin' the stops" (the inward movement) number.

Either way, they are generally both listed as two way dimensions.

ok i was way off i thought it had to do with the distance of cone travel

It does. The distance of cone travel is EXACTLY the same distance as the voice coil's travel, right? They are mechanically connected to one another, so where one goes the other MUST, as well (with the possible exception of a burp grenade!)

One minor correction, Xmax is generally rated as a one-way figure. Although some companies do rate it two-way (Audiobahn) to make their figures look better.

I thought Dan was one of the few exceptions to the "two-way" rule. So the TC1000 10's I have in my trunk are REALLY 42mm Xmax? Sweet! I can re-figure my TL, then!

(Actually, I've been toying with the idea of re-building the enclosure altogether - I think I want to go back to sealed... I miss the output capabilities of those drivers... posted_image
