Vehicle is a 01  LHS with the Infinity sound system, factory installed.   The radio tuner and the CD changer are OK, problem is with cassettes. Tapes will advance when 'play' is selected, but no sound is heard.  Turning the volume to max only results in hiss.  Rewind and fast forward are working    Several cassettes that work elsewhere have been tried with no success.  However, a cassette iPod adapter will work.  Only standard cassette seem to be affected.   Any ideas?

Chances are that there is a separate belt for the play mechanism and it is broken. Or it could be a mechanical gear not engaging. The adaptor works because it doesn't rely on the tape moving, only that the tape head is in contact with the correct portion of the adaptor.

The tape advances when play is selected.  For example, when the tape is rewound to the beginning and played, it will get past the leader at the beginning of the tape, but no sound can be heard.
