I picked up an Eclipse 54420 head unit and installed it in my car. When a CD is inserted there is the distinct noise of the laser scanning the spinning disc in the speakers. My other Eclipse 5441 head unit did not make such a sound. Is this normal or, if not, is there a fix?

I assume you bought it used?  Perhaps that's why the former owner sold it.  You can take it to an authorized Eclipse dealer (along with your proof of purchase) and most likely they can send it in for service for you.
