I have a 96 geo prism LSI with a aftermarket cd player I installed a few years ago with no problems. When I start the car the cd player comes on and works fine, as soon as I press down on the shifter handle to put into gear the cd player turns off, put it back in park and it comes back on. I can't figure out why, I checked the wiring harness and everything looks fine and I can't find any shorts. Can you all help?

Has it always done this or did it just start doing this?

It just started doing it a couple of weeks ago.

Whenever any piece of gear stops functioning correctly that was previously working fine, something has changed.  If you have not made any changes to the system, something broke.  This sounds like an electrical issue with your car, or some wiring somewhere has been damaged.

Its almost like the shifter grounds out the stereo when its put in park. I may have tear everything out and check under the shifter and inside the dash.

If thre is wiring running through the center console then yes, the shifter could have damaged it.
