I have a set of Clarion 4x6 plates from 2001 or so, they have the 4" woofer and 1" tweeter. THey work perfectly however one of them has a fried capacitor. I am assuming the capacitor is part of the crossover network but when it fried it let out a loud pop. This was back in 01 when it happened and after they popped I bought a capacitor with the exact same value from Radio Shack, replaced it and a few months later it did it again which is why they are sitting in the box till this day.
My little brother just picked up a used Blazer which just so happens to use 4x6's in the dash. Rather than see him spend money to replace the speakers I figured it was a perfect time to get rid of the 4x6's that have just been collecting dust in my garage.
Anyone have any idea how to remedy the capacitor popping issue? Is the Radio Shack capacitor I bought crap? Is there a better place to buy one that will last?
Make sure that you are using bipolar capacitors. Off the shelf everyday electrolytics will not work well in audio as a 'crossover' as they are meant to work with DC only. Audio is AC, and flips directions, bad for standard electrolyte caps! Bipolar capacitors are what you will need to look for and the popping issue I am certain would go away.
