I am looking for some one who can help explain Snells Law to me I am ok at sound wave theory, but for some reason am having a little problem with this.

snell's law doesn't really have to do with acoustics...its the refraction of light like looking into a glass of water with a straw in it...from the side the straw is not a continuous piece.

The formula works the same for sound waves from what I have been reading. When a wave hits an object at a certain angle other than 90 degrees that angle changes when it enters that object. And it changes depending on the acoustic impedance mismatch, frequency and the velocity between the medium of the original material and new material. If I am way off please let me know. It sounds like what you said, but wtih light waves. The light hits a object that bends it's light to make the light wave change in the "glass with a straw".

are you trying to calculation the direction of energy after say a sound wave hits a wall???

Here: https://www.ndt-ed.org/EducationResources/CommunityCollege/Ultrasonics/Physics/refractionsnells.htm I've heard of this principle being used by scientists developing materials used to sound-proof a room. ------------- Support the12volt.com

Actualy I am a Level 3 NDT inspector at Spirit Areospace fomaly Boeing Aircraft in Wichita. I have taken and passed My level 3 Magnetic Particle test and Penetrant test. I am working on my Ultrasonic level 3 test and this is one the sites I use to study. With that being said I was looking over most of the info again on the afternoon of the 19th and it all started to click again I haven't studied it for over 10 years. Alot of the info on that site can directly be applied to this feild. I love both of them so it seems to work out well for me if I can remember it all. How did you come up with this site?

I used to work at THX and we were doing a lot of research into sound propagation and the materials science used to treat acoustic spaces at the time. I recalled the site from those days. :) ------------- Support the12volt.com

Do I smoke crack?(metaphorically) In a square 1-ft3 box, take a masonry brick, dice it into 1/4's, glue each 1/4 into each bottom corner of the box. Purpose: to provide a dense barrier to reflect/absorb sound waves roaming inside the box.

I think so. Because of the density and elasticity of the brick it will not absorb much like ~3%. Now reflecting it will do that do to its properties. The two terms are fairly opposite. I don't see how those bricks are helping you, but if they make you think it does, then it does. Later Matt

That is awsome I would think that THX would be a neat place to work.

I've always wondered about the theory, I've only tried it once and must not of been impressed enough to remember to do it again. Its suppose to be for perfectly square boxes to imbalance the sound waves from all reflecting the same way off the sub.
thanx
