Subject: increasing ohms with a resistor

I have 1 JL12w6v1 6ohm. The only wiring options are 3 or 12 ohms. I am looking to run it anywhere from 4 to 8. Reason being that i am powering it with a home theater sub amp. I question the amps ability to run at 3ohms without issues. Does anyone have any good ideas?? A resistor???
Thanks

Run it at 12 ohms or get a second sub - a resistor isn't going to help you as it will draw power from the amp and have to dissipate heat.  If you do add a resistor the resistor should have a similar watt rating as your sub.

I was thinking about running it at 12 ohms but am concerned that it will not be enough power. its rated at 300@4ohms so that would be 75@12ohms. Maybe ill run it at 3 and not crank up the gain too much

if the sub is DVC then just run one coil for a 6 ohm load. you wont get the full 300W but that is ok because the rms of the sub will be reduced too so it should work out.

1: Read DYohn's answer.
2: Read my answer on this page. It's the second one down.
3: Most home amps will not run 3 ohms, happily. Whether you turn the gain down or not, you will still be abusing the outputs and power supply. Three ohms is three ohms WHEREVER the gain is in it's range. Either run one coil for 6 ohms, or run both of them in series for 12 ohms, but don't risk the 3 ohm setup.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
