I fixing up a 1988 cougar ls for my sons first car.I am installing a pioneer head unit and XM radio, plus maybe a HD tuner.I was thinking about going to an auto salvage yard to get  one maybe to amps out of a lincoln or mercury .Will it be much trouble or can it be done?

Unless you are doing a direct replacement for a current factory amp in the car don't bother. Factory amplified systems sometimes have crossovers built into the amps and the amps are specifically designed for that setup in whatever vehicle it comes in. Also the RMS power output is probably so low /degraded over the years it is probably not even worth it.

I would suggest just getting a quality aftermarket amp and going from there. They are easier to replace down the road because they use pretty much the same connections. There is a certain cut-off point for money as well. What is your budget? Then we can probably get a good idea what you are trying to work with.

What type of music does he listen to and does he like it loud or is he more about sound quality?
