I have a 1994 GMC Sub...the problem i'm having is when i turn my radio up the radio shuts the speakers off. My subs will still be beating, but no mids or highs. When i switch the radio to another function and then back and turn the radio down a few clicks everything is normal. I've checked the wiring a few times and grounded the radio to the chassis, put a bigger fuse in the radio block on my truck with no inprovements. I've changed HU as well from a Pioneer deh-600 to a Eclipse 3100 still no changes. Help!!!posted_image

Balance the radio to the left channels, turn it up and see if it still cuts out.  Then balance to the right, turn up again.  If it only cuts out on one side only, balance it to that side and fade to the front, turn it up.  Then fade to the rear, turn it up.  If it cuts out on only the front or the rear, there is a problem with the wiring or that speaker.

Sounds like a bad speaker...Or not wired correctly...Did you use a wiring harness(or has the harness in vehicle been cut...?)...Are there any speakers that are added to the system(as in extra speakers that are not in factory locations...?)...? Why did you upgrade fuse size...Have you been blowing fuses...? Adding bigger fuses is often a big NO NO>>>!

I have not tried the fading probable solution...I did use a specified vehicle wiring harness, when i brought the vehicle it had the stock radio. No fuses have been blown so i will change that back.

Do any of the speakers sound "bad"...? Have you pulled the radio and inspected the wiring...?

Have you ever replaced the factory speakers...? Or added any...IE...Tweeters...Door pods...?

BTW...Did the problem occur out of the blue...? Immediately after radio was installed...? Or maybe after something else was installed/worked on...?

the speakers don't sound bad its just when i want to pump up the volume a little they shut off. I have replaced all the factory speakers with pioneer 4x6 on the dash and 6.5 for the rear door and 4x10 in the rear pillar. I want to add a component set in the front doors but holding off until i figure out this problem.

Have you pulled the radio and inspected the wiring...?

And you have went around to each speaker and physically put your ear on it to listen...?

BTW...Did the problem occur out of the blue...? Immediately after radio was installed...? Or maybe after something else was installed/worked on...?

Try the fade and balance and see if you can narrow it down...The harness should have two seperate harness for the speakers...You could pull radio and unplug each speaker harness...One at a time...Then turn radio up and see if it cuts out.

This was my thought as well. I've had at least a few wiring issues over the years.

i've checked the wiring a few times...is it possible for a radio to overheat?? If i have my windows down they shut off like 10-20 mins of playing. If I have the a/c blowing it takes a little bit longer for them to shut off.

Ive noticed when the radio is not wired properly...It can cause the stereo to get hot...

Thank you all that gave input...we have found the problem. using the fade/bal we narrowed it down to the driver side front dash speaker. again i would like to thank everyone for your input.
