Subject: need advice on a sq 12 sub

Good morning all.  I'm trying to find a sub to fit my needs.  I'm looking for a single 12" sub to go in a small port enclosure.  This is going on the passenger side of the rear cargo area of my 84 Chevy S10 Blazer (please see the attached pic to get an idea) and the driver will be firing towards the driver side.  I'm not sure about port direction yet.  I have a 5 channel Memphis  16-MCH1300 to run it and the rest of my system.  I'm looking for a single one ohm or dual 2 ohm sub so that I can run the sub channel at 1 ohm and get the full 1100 watts RMS.   By my guestimation, I have between 1 - 1.25 cu ft to work with.  I would like to make a ported box with the proper tuning for the sub.  I don't want to put anything in my center cargo area as I drop the back seat and haul things from time to time.  I'm leaning towards FI Car Audio, but am not sure if they make a sub that will fit in that small of a box.  I'm also going more for sound quality and I listen to a wide range of music from classical to jazz to rap.  Price range is under $400.

Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Jason

Sorry.  The image didn't upload.  Let's try this again....

As previously state, it's going on the passenger side firing towards the driver side.  I plan to fiberglass the back of the enclosure to gain as much space as possible.  It will go up as high as the window sill and come out even with the finder well.  It will run from just behind the seat all the way to the tail gate.  I don't have exact measurements at the moment.  My goal is to wrap or cover it so it appears to blend with the interior rather than looking like an after thought.

Thanks again for any and all advise.

Also, I just saw this post.....

but he is wanting a sealed enclosure whereas I'd rather go ported if I can.  Just wanted to put that out there before I get flamed lol.

A couple quick comments.  If you really want a SQ setup, you don't want to run at 1-ohm.  The amplifier distortion at 1-ohm is 10 times what it is at 4-ohms.  And 1-1.25 cuft is really small for a ported enclosure.  That being said, Fi makes excellent woofers.

Ok, fair enough.  I don't mind SPL, but it's not my main concern plus I do want to get the most from my amp.  I have a Dayton Audio 12" H.O. sub in about a 1.5-1.75 cu ft ported enclosure powered by a RF 100ix bridged mono and it sounds great.  The only issue is that it's only a 4 ohm sub and the Memphis will only do 300 rms at 4 ohm.  Plus it's not on the side of the cargo area where I want it.  I'm not apposed to a sealed enclosure, I'd just rather do ported.  I did my first properly tuned ported box and I've been spoiled I guess.

Plus, let me add that I don't plan on competing with the setup, so it's fine if it's a little on the boomy side.

Looks like I'll be going with the FI Q12, but I'll just go with a sealed box, unless someone can think of a 12" sub that can run in a 1.25 cuft ported box, total ohm rating of 1 ohm (SVC or DVC) and handle around 1000 rms.  .

I know you want to save space, but I don't see why you cant squeek another .8-1 cu.ft. and go ported. Just make the box a little taller and narrow.

Honestly, I haven't taken any dimensions of the space I want to fill.  The key is that I don't want to go any taller than the bottom of the window.  If I remember it was roughly 17" tall, around 2' wide, and about 10" deep.  According to my calcs, that comes to roughly 1.5 cu.ft.  Once I get some hard dimensions, I can have a better idea of what I'm looking for.  I don't believe it'll be much more than that, size wise.  The minimum recommended for the FI Q ported is 1.8 cu ft.

I hear ya, my problem is that I like to cram in as many speakers/box as I can fit haha. Good luck!

I used to do that too lol.  I'm going mostly low key with this one, plus I want it look as close to stock as possible.  For example, I'm the process of doing a v8 swap on the truck, but I'm staying away from loud mufflers, taking out the lopey cam and gear drive, etc. and running the exhaust in a stock type location and no chrome tips lol.  I just don't want to draw too much attention.  It's not a daily driver, but I don't want to be affraid to drive it anywhere.

Just an idea (i'm not sure if you included it in your measurements) but you could build it over the wheel well and make an L shaped enclosure. I'll bet you could get the 2cu.ft., but you would have to use a port with a smaller surface area so that it wont have to be very long and thus take up much box space.

Yeah, it would go over the wheel well and start just behind the back seat.  True, I was playing with the calculators here on the site and noticed that the narrower the port, the shorter it had to be.  I think the best thing to do at this point is to go actually measure the space I have and go from there.  I also have to find somewhere to put the amp as well.  I'd like to sink it off into the tailgate, but I'd then be worried about water leakage.  There's almost no space to put anything in this truck lol unless I put it and the box in the cargo area.

too small of a ported enclosure will sound worse than a properly sized sealed enclosure

You're right.  I wont build a ported unless I can either A: get it to the proper size, or B find a sub that will use a smaller venter enclosure.  Otherwise I do a sealed.
