I have a 2003 dodge ram reg cab ,with 2 12" re audio subs ,I was showing off my system the other day to a friend and we noticed that the subs seemed to be louder with the doors of my truck open than when they were closed .Is there a reason why this would happen? ,I figured the cabin gain would make them louder.

This could be due to the acoustical environment of the vehicle.  I noticed my car sounds cleaner and louder when the windows are down instead of up.

Pretty common. Sealed up I lose around 3db vs. running outlaw style(combination of windows/doors open). This is still dependent on the vehicle and install type. Also opening doors and windows will also change the acoustical tunning in the vehicle and would explain it sounding better/ different.

Are your woofers in a sealed or ported box?

Ported or sealed really makes no difference. Its pretty much just the vehicle. I had a civic hatch that with the windows up, mic on dash it was louder than in any open configuration. Both in its walled state and cargo location enclosure configs. Take my walled 300c or my Navigator they are louder and clearer with windows or doors open. It simply comes down to the vehicle, equipment, tuning and many other factors. But I would have to say that MOST installs/vehicles will be louder in outlaw configuration. IE windows down or a door open.

Your vehicle becomes a ported enclosure, opening doors or windows changes the tuning frequency of the enclosure.
