im a newb to the ever changing stereo world and im hoping a stereo guru will chime in and school me a little. im looking to upgrade my stock silverado radio to a touch screen unit. its a 07 classic body style with steering wheel controls and a bose (not the escalade model) stereo system.
are all 2 din touch screen head units compatable?
is there any specific head unit i need to look for in order to keep the steering wheel controls?
do i need more than the adapter for the radio to truck connection?
do i need an adapter for the steering wheel controls?
i previously had an amp and a sub box installed and i know they needed a high to low something or other. is that omitted now or do i just leave that alone?
thanks in advance

I can help with a few of these questions but not all.
1. Double din head units are compatible. About the only difference between on and the other will be the length it is. But the opening size is standard.
2. You will need an adapter to keep steering wheel controls. Only some head units will be able to be compatible for this. Most of the better brands will have this feature.
3. You will need an adapter from stock wiring to the new deck. Not sure on the bose part but you may need a amp bypass.
4. As for the "High-Low something or other" I believe you are referring to a high to low converter. With the new head unit you will have RCA output and will no longer need this if you run RCA's from the the deck to the amplifier.

thank you j.reed. i think i have it.
i can choose any touch screen unit i like.
the head unit i pick will determine if i need a steering wheel control adapter or not.
regardless i will need an adapter to connect the truck harness to the head unit.
the high to low converter gets tossed and rca cables plug into the head unit.
i did however forget to ask about onstar. i have onstar. will this be an issue?
thanks again.

The only problem I had with onstar was the fact it was giving a code. It didn't show a check engine light or anything but, It did throw a code when hooked to the computer when they were looking for a different problem. It was as simple as them changing a setting to the PC. This did not affect anything though. They just changed it to not run through the radio for the onstar and only did so to clear the error from showing up when doing checks.
BTW you will also need a dash kit.

A solid double din unit is the Eclipse AVN626E. Add a dedicated steering wheel interface from PAC, the SWIECL2 and a Bose / Onstar interface and you are good to go.

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
Im using a Kenwood DDX812. I have loved this head unit. The ddx8120 adds navigation. But they did change this model this year. The replacement model numbers are ddx814 which is nav ready. The ddx9140 is with nav. All these models are ready for PAC steering wheel controllability. They as well have built in Ipod controlers and bluetooth built in.
