(looking at all metra harnessess) Is the GMOS-01 harness mandatory for this vehical? or can I just use a 2003 harness and run a wire to the ignition for switched power?

I just never got what exactly the GMOS-01 did other then make the speaker ding and create an accessory power wire. A friend is putting a radio into this vehical and doesnt really feal like dishing out the 100+ dollars (I know you can get them cheaper online but it is still a bit for a harness).

so we are hoping to get a 2003 harness and just run the accessory wire down to the ignition.

Thanks for the help.

Jonathan

PS. no Bose or onstar.

In certain states and provinces if you remove the radio and it has safety features that are lost, you could be fined for this. It's like removing airbags or seatbelts. To answer your question.... yes but check with your local laws before procedding.

what sort of safety features are retained by the GMOS-01? is it just the saftey chime? what makes it a "saftey" chime anyway?

The reason the chime is a safety feature is it dings whenever a warning light comes on. It also dings to remind you to put your seat belt on. There are plenty of "mechanics" and dealerships that will refuse to work on cars because of not having the chime hooked up also. The GMOS-01 will also give you a RAP wire (retained accy power). Going to an ignition or accy wire will make the radio work, but having a RAP wire will make the new radio work like the old one did - stay on until you open a door.

All in all its worth it to use the right interface harness.

To answer your question, Yes you can use the 2003 and run the provided wire to the fuse box.  All things mentioned earlier stand true.  But it seems as though you already knew you would lose the chime.  Maybe you did or didn't know he would lose Retained Accessory Power.  But as stated earlier, you will lose that feature.

it is not my car so I will have to check with the owner and see what they want to do. loosing the chime doesnt seam like a huge deal. if they want the RAP feature I could just hook up a few relays as per the relay section of this site. and if the ding is a problem I could always get an external speaker, I know that metra makes them.

Thanks for the info.

Don't know about the Envoys, but I know several Canyon and Colorado owners who have fried their BCM by not using the interface. Power mirrors, locks and windows quit working or worked sporadicly. The only thing these unfortunate souls had in common, they opted not to use the interface. You can get it on Ebay for like $40 or so. (It is the Metra brand)

That problem with the Colorados when the only window that works is the drivers window and the door locks and other windows are dead, is the DDM(Drivers door Module). It is built into the Drivers door switch and has been a problem with that truck since it came out. BCM's are ok and replacing the DDM solves the problem. The Colorodos also have a problem with their fusebox under the hood actually melting a hole into it. Usually when this happens it takes out the BCM. Either way it is not Radio related.
Also on the Canyon there is a Yellow Retained accessory wire you can use that runs up the drivers A-piller for the sunroof, even if you don't have one. Not sure where such a wire is for other GM's. But I know I've read on here that there are such RAP wires on other GM's just in various locations depending on the model/year.
