to port or not to port

I have decided on an RE Audio SL12 slim sub. I know some of you folks don't think to highly of slim or shallow subs, but I have very limited room and I'm gonna go for it. My question is, should I build a sealed or ported box? Which will give the best possible bass response? I listed to primarily rap/hip-hop as well as country (what a combo, eh?). I will be pushing approximately 400 watts to the sub if that makes a difference. Thanks again

A ported is gonna give you better output for your rap, But since you say you Are limited on space.. You may not have the desired room to build an optimal ported enclosure. Check RE's site and see how much air space that particular sub wants for a ported box. And if you can supply the room, Go for it.

RE says you can use either alignment.  Realize a proper vented enclosure will be twice the physical size of a proper sealed one.  If you can make 1.75 cuft fit your space, go ported.  Otherwise target 0.75 cuft sealed.  And those drivers list a thermal power limit of 350 watts, so if you plan to use all 400 watts of your amp you will be better protected from frying your sub in a sealed alignment.

u have limited room u say well ive got a power accoustic mofo in a 2.3 cube ported box behind my seat of my ford f150 and still have plenty of room in the truck so just think a little bit more before u think u have to go with a shallow sub cuz if u build the box right u can get the required airspace and still have room with a bigger sub

Ya... It's really a "Mid-size", bigger than an S-10, smaller than a Silverado. I'm over 6' tall and I cannot afford to lose any seat travel. I have a max enclosure size in a wedge configuration of 50" Wide x 14.5" Tall x 4.5" Top Depth and 8" Bottom Depth. Using 3/4 MDF, this gives me approximately 1.7ft3 internal Vb. Mounting depth of a sub can't be more than 4.5-5" or it'll hit the back of my enclosure. Heck, if I didn't need a passenger seat, I'd just put in a 15" RE Audio XXX smack dab in the middle of the floor! LOL!

I understand you cant loose one of only 2 seats, But wut about a little bit of space in the bed?

HAhahaha. I've seen it Go VERY well, and I've seen it go VERY badly..
If you know wut you're doin, i would go for it man.
On the other hand, I have also head alot of behind the seat boxes sound pretty good.
If the 1.7 cuft is enough space for a ported box, thats wut i would do.

Hi Josh

I'm in a similar boat, but I chose a Memphis 15-SC12D4 sub instead of the RE. I'll be putting this into a 1 cubic foot sealed fiberglass enclosure, which i'll start building soon. :)

I was really on the fence over those Memphis subs. I am excited to hear someone's actually trying them out. Keep me posted on how it turns out.

well ported will be better with your music. if you do do ported you can do a port that comes out the side.

give me dimmentions and ill design it for you.
