I need to know if there is a way to test an altanator to find out how many amps it is

Any alternator shop should be able to test it.

Do you have a DC clamp meter and a battery load tester?  If so, attach the clamp on the wire between the alternator and the battery, then attach the load to the battery terminals, Trigger the load and notice amount of current running through the charge wire.  While someone is in the vehicle keeping it revved between 2000 and 3000 RPM.
