i recently bought an hk4000d mono amp and 2 l7 15" subs (dual 4 ohm). the guy i bought the amp from told me it was supposedly modded to run at 1 ohm (which is the only probable way to run it im not gonna go at 4 or 8ohm, waste of power)
so after buying the amp i found out it wasnt modded so it can only run down to 2 ohms....my question is should i buy 2 more dual 4 ohm l7s and run a total of 4 subs to get a 2ohm load , or will that be under powering the 4 l7's? the amp is rated at 3600rms at 2 ohms 14.4v. ***or*** do i get the amp modded and run the 2 subs i got at 1 ohm? my goal is to pound hard as hell, i'd love to crack my windshield in my yukon!! thanx!!
That amp might do 2K watts peak. The ratings they publish are hopefull at best. I wouldn't expect that amp to last long at 1 ohm. As far as sound quality, you bought a "3,500W" amp for $200 or so. Don't expect any miracles. This amp turns up on this forum often, search and see what other's have said about MA audio and the HK4000D.
It's a turd. Albeit a shiny, polished, chrome-plated one, but still! That 3600 watt rating is the ILS rating... "If Lightning Strikes". I love that, and I owe credit to the poster that posted it right here at the12volt... I think it was

1) You can't get an amp "modded" to make it "run safer" at lower impedances... It would involve a total rebuild of the power supply, and by the time you spend that kind of money, go get a real amplifier, already capable of it's published capacity. You are also wrong in your assumption of "waste of power". If you wire that amp for 4 ohms, the lowest safe impedance you can (without modding... were you paying attention??) you will have less than 3dB difference in output! As I continue to tell EVERYBODY, believing that they need to load their amplifiers to everything the amp can support, if you are not competing, there is ABSOLUTELY no reason to do such a thing... You are GUARANTEED not going to hear the difference!

2) You are VERY likely not going to go cracking any windshields with that combination.
3) Let's do a little math... Stick with me, here...
2000W @ 2-ohms, into 2 speakers = 1000W each.
4000W @ 1-ohm, into 4 speakers = 1000W each.
Think about it... You will be no less "underpowering" (gawd, I hate that word...) two speakers than you would be four speakers. Sure, you'll gain a total of 6dB, (shyah, right... MA, dude...) but you still won't (let ALONE
can't) 1) crack your windshield, or 2) run at 1-ohm!
