I have 4 inch openings only in my truck (not great I know). I've tried pioneers 4 inch speakers and while they were ok I wanted something with more bass if possible (I know a 4in can only do so much). So I replaced the pioneers with infinity reference since they have a larger cone area. I was all exited till I tried them after installing only to find they had LESS bass than the pionners!! WT...F. Makes no sense. So now I'm going to go for polks probably since they seem to be the last best hope (which I can still afford). Anybody know of some 4inchers that don't suck? I might even just get some 5.25s and jerry rig some mounts just to get a bigger speaker in there.

What are the chances that you connected one of the speakers backwards?  Balance it all the way to the left and listen to it for a minute, then balance it to the right, listen to that for a minute, then place the balance in the middle, if there is bass with either speaker playing by itself and less bass with both playing, you have one of them connected backwards.

I'm 99% sure they are wired properly since I just had to pull the wires off the pioneers. No rewiring needed. I double/triple etc checked when I originally wired them. Plus the + & - terminals/wire ends are 'keyed' as well. I actually came across a review for some reference 6.5's and the guy saying they had no bass as well. Too bad I didn't read that before I bought them..

Rockford Fosgates seem to be above weaksauce status though I don't really trust any of these after marker speakers anymore. I might just take some old 6.5 (I think) factory speakers I have and do some stupid rigging, lol. Tired of the fuggin HYPE.

Me personally I would go with a bigger speaker, If I had the room......If you dont want to get into custom work check out the Morel CAW 428 4" woofer.....Another option a little more budget friendly , Dayton audio ND105 4' woofer........both are on sale at Parts Express until 2-28-2010 if Im not mistaken.

Did you balance left and right to see if there was more bass with only one speaker playing?

So what amp is it you have running these speakers? I'm going to guess none. Get an amp. Your pioneers likely "sounded" like they had more bass because they took less power to drive, then you thought you could run more powerful speakers with the same power and get more out of them. Doesn't quite work that way.

I did the balance test. Didn't change so pretty sure they are wired properly. After refiddling with the EQ I turned the bass up more and now they sound better. Guess I was hoping to get by without a subwoofer since I have really no room for one (thou that tiny Dayton 4incher seems really trick....never seen a woofer so small). I might just get it, thanks. Also correct that I don't have an amp. My stereo is a 50x4 watt I believe.

^ your stereo actually puts out like 10-15 rms at BEST. Get an amp.
