what are crossovers. passive/active and what do they do? sorry for the beginner question

They divide the entire audio band into smaller bands. A passive one goes between amplifier and speaker, and an active one goes between signal source and amplifier.

A crossover is the heart of any loudspeaker system. Any system you buy will have an appropriate crossover included or built in, unless you are building it yourself. Most amplifiers also have active crossovers built in, called low pass filters and high pass filters. You use both of these (passive and active) to send the proper frequency bands to the proper speakers.
What is it you're trying to do? If you are purchasing your main speakers from an established brand name, you do not need to purchase any additional crossovers. If you are building your own set or if you are trying to biamp a set of components, then you need to buy or build them. I assume from your question that this is not what you are doing, correct? If you are not trying to DIY your mains then you do not need an additional crossover.
