I recently had 2 10" Diamond Audio CM3 series subs installed in my Explorer and they definately kill most of the competition for being extremely rude and having a good sound quality. I paid $130 each for them. They have an rms rating of 500 watts and they will handle every bit of it, trust me. Noone else out there who have subs who can do that for that price.

If you just want them to be loud, but not necessarily accurate, I'd recommend a bandpass box.  Though they're a little more expensive than a sealed box, they are MUCH more efficient and will give you much higher sound output with the same amplifier.  Just make sure you get a box that matches the sub manufacturer's recommended enclosure dimensions and type.

You could pick up 2 Rockford RFP3412's for around $90 a piece. They're 200RMS 400Peak. I'm around 142db with mine so far. I've had these subs in a bandpass box before (with less power than I'm running now) and litterally shook the screws lose securing the plexiglass

I recently (christmas) done an install on a 2000 cougar. I bought my sister 2 Kenwood KFC-W3005 12" subs (350 rms, 700 max), a slanted front hatchback box, and a 4 gauge install kit and a kenwood amp 400 watt for right at around $400.00 actually a little less. The reason she wanted kenwood she wanted all her equip to match and at 1st before i had a chance to install her excelon hu I had the subs hooked up by low level input to they factory tape/ cd player. They still sounded really good . This was my 1st experience with kenwood subs and they perform pretty well
