coil and capacitor on polk db651

Quick questions on some used Polk db651's I just inherited (totaled car wreck in family). The external capacitor and coil you see wired on the speakers are missing. From what I can tell, they had a .35mH coil and 6.8 uF capacitor soldered on in-line at the speaker inputs. You can see them on retail sites showing the back of the speakers (they are built with these on there). Since they were removed, two questions:

1)Can I run these speakers successfully without the coil/cap on there? I assume they couldn't be working as a crossover since there is only 1 positive & negative lead going inside the speaker (meaning they must x-over inside between woofer/tweeter)? I also can't figure out exactly what they were doing (been reading up on the passive filter stuff).

2)Can I just buy replacement coil/cap and solder on (assuming I can find a clear picture of how they are configured from the factory)?

Any help is appreciated........the speakers are in solid shape so I'd rather save them versus trash them.

It will be a filter (420Hz?).
Maybe the cap was to (also?) prevent DC from the speaker.

I thought about it being a filter but it doesn't seem to make much sense to have one in the <1000 Hz neighborhood on a 6.5" coax speaker, does it?

I'm just trying to see if I can run these without the cap/coil on there. Like I said, I've seen retail pictures of them with the cap/coil so I don't think they were added post purchase. Doesn't look like it at all.

It's the crossover for the tweeter.  It is absolutely required if you don't want to blow the tweeter.
