if a subwoofer had 8 guage push terminals, and the amp has 12 guage termianls, could you run 12 guage to the sub? will that work, without frying the wire or damaging the sub or amp? or could you comehow fit 8 guage into the 12 guage amp terminals? thanks

You can run 16 ga from the amp to the sub if you wanted. Unless it's some insane wattage (3000 watts or something), it won't cause you any problems at all.

So to answer your question, 12 ga will work just fine. Assuming this is to send the signal from the amp to the sub. If you are talking about powering the amp (the battery cable), that is a different story.
