current issues?

Hey all. So I just installed two amps in my car. An Eclipse 4 channel running like 120 watts rms x 4.   And a JL Audio 250/1. when I turn the volume up past 3/4 of the way up it starts to crackle. Has anyone ever had this problem? What is the solution?

Any thoughts would be awesome.

Oh by the way, have a second Kinetik Battery (the small one KHC-600) in the trunk, and am running 2 gauge positive and negative to it (that's what kinetik told me to do). I bought a PAC-200 battery isolator but have not installed it yet. A note on the PAC-200, it says to run one side directly to the Alternator rather than the primary battery, and the other side to the second auxiliary battery. Does that sound weird?

Any thoughts from you super 12 volt dudes would be much appreciated.

Batteries are normally connected to the alternator so they get max voltage.
But that depends on their purpose - parallel battery reserve (non-charging) or max voltage to the battery - eg, poorly or non dc-dc converted amps etc.

So the PAC-200 isolator is manually controlled....
I just use $12-$18 60A or 140A relays controlled by the charging alternator.

Get a meter and check the voltage with the system turned UP...Will be a start...Post the voltages...

OK, update. I put the checked the voltage and it is like 12.4 (on the batteries) with the engine off. Not perfect, but reasonable, considering I had been playing music and had the doors open and trunk and what not.

Anyway, back to the original problem, which was when I turned the music up it crackles and distorts at about 2/3 to 3/4. I though maybe I had an issue with the voltage of the preouts coming from the factory BOSE deck, so I put two Audiocontrol crossovers with line drivers in them. Still crackles and distorts badly at about the same place.

I am wondering if it has something to do with balanced vs. unbalanced outputs, or perhaps I am over powering the speakers... I dunno. I am out of ideas.

any help or ideas would be really awesome.

Oh, by the way the speakers are 90 watts rms in the front. The rears are doubled up 80 rms and 90 rms, both running parallel of the rear channels. Not sure what the deal is on the Bose deck... I had a 4 channel JL Audio 300/4 amp in there set to input voltage low, and it was happy. I am going to fix the JL amp. About that, should I send it in to JL, or take it to a local shop???

Well I have a volt meter plugged into my cigarette lighter and the voltage looks good, usually never below 14 volts with the system up, but I usually do not turn it up past the distortion. I will check it again this evening.

You need to check the voltage AT the amplifier.  The system must be playing at a volume above moderate.
