ok i have a problem, one the rear set of preouts on my head unit make a buzzing sound.....i thought maybe it was some kinda wire misplacement in the car, but when i connect my rca's to the front set, the noise isnt there, but when it is connected to the rear set, the noise is present.  im adding a 4ch amplifier to my car and need some advice on how to fix this or what the problem could be. thanks

I'm assuming you've tried switching the outputs, as well as just running each pair on its own?  For example, give the 4-channel amp's front RCA inputs the signal coming from the rear RCA outputs of the head unit, and give the amp's rear RCA inputs the signal from the front RCA outputs of the head unit.  Try both of these on their own and then together.  See if the noise switches over to the other pair of speakers when you swap to different cables--if so, the problem is with your amp.  If not, then the problem is most likely with your head unit or with one set of the RCA cables (could be pinched somewhere or might have strands exposed touching metal somewhere in the vehicle).

By trying each pair of RCAs with each set of outputs, you are also essentially testing the integrity of those cables themselves.  Try all the different possible combinations and note any patterns.

Ideal way to troubleshoot this is really to just grab a brand new RCA cable and run it temporarily across the seats or outside the vehicle, from the deck to the amp.  If the noise is still there you probably have a problem with one of the components.

i did that, its a problem with the head unit, is there some way the ground could be messed up in the head unit or is there any kinda noise supressor i could use cuz it sounds like a bad ground cuz when the engine revs, the noise goes up with it

How did you run your rca and power cables thru the car?

rcas down middle, power down left side, they are far enough apart

yea it sounds like you've pretty much eliminated the wiring as the cause of the problem...David Navone makes some really good noise filters, you might want to check out some of these, in particular the ones that say alternator noise filters.

It is possible that the ground inside the deck is messed up but I think this is very unlikely.  Even if that were the case, you'd pay more getting it fixed than you would on a good noise filter.  Just something to think about...

Did you leave the other end of the RCA's connected to the same input of the 4-channel amp, or did you switch from front to rear amp inputs when you moved the RCA's at the headunit?

If you didn't change the connection at the amp, you may have a bad set of pre-outs. How old is the headunit?

Check your grounds for the headunit and amp. Make sure you are grounding to the frame, and it is bare metal. Do not ground the headunit to a piece of metal in/on the dash itself, and do not ground the amp to a parcel shelf (not saying you did, just trying to cover as many bases as possible)

Also make sure (just as a matter of good installation) to run your RCA's and speaker wires down opposite sides of the car (or at least as far appart as possible) to avoid interfeerence.

50-249 posts=standard member

250-999=silver member

1000+=gold member

As I understand it, standard members can edit their own posts and upload images, but not delete their own posts.  Silver members can upload files in addition to images, and delete their own posts.  Bberman1 is the only gold member right now so I have no idea what (if anything) additional you can do at that level.

I haven’t seen any difference since I became a gold member! But I think some of the more active members should be able to have full privileges since they are valuable assets to the forum.

Certainly you MUST have noticed the extra star under your nameposted_image.

anyways, I can usually delete my posts, if I try to do so soon after posting.  I haven't noticed any particular time frame that you have before it doesn't let you delete them, cuz I always am only deleting topics immediately after I post them. i.e. when I post the same thing someone else just said but beat me to it.posted_image

On certain topics, however, I can not delete my posts even if I try immediately after posting.  I don't know if this depends on what level member started the topic, or how many total posts have been in the topic, or how long the topic has lasted, or what.

Agree with you about the full privileges for most members.  But I can understand the potential for abuse if casual browsers and web surfers who've only posted once or twice, are given the ability to upload files and images.

Let me just say that I've tried a couple other mobile electronics forums online and none of them can even compare to the12volt.com.  Not only do we have so many active members contributing to the forums on a regular basis, but the whole interface for creating/editing/posting messages is BY FAR the easiest one to use.  The way I see it, 12volt has somehow not only kept this site free for all of us to use, but kept it up to date and included some really cool features along the way.  The knowledge that I myself have learned from it, I could not put a price tag on.  And so he is more than welcome to do whatever he wants as far as restricting members' privileges, myself includedposted_image.

esmith69 don’t delete your message or I will look weird posting this, but I have to agree that this is the best 12volt forum on the web and I have learned more here than from anything else. But I don’t think that most members should have full privileges.  I think the members that are active on the forum and provide help for people on a daily basis like yourself should have access to delete edit etc despite their membership status.  I’m not complaining by any means I don’t have a problem with the way its set up now. Come to think about it I have never really thought about it until it came up today. I’m not asking to see any changes in the future I'm just voicing my opinion.
