i have a jvc amp that will put out 65 watts rms at four ohms per channel, and two 6x9 4 ohm pioneer triaxials on my rear deck. i want to hook these into the amp, i wanted to know if it would be too much for the speakers if they are rated for 40 watts rms

Typically you want to match rms x rms. It is however desirable to have more rms output from the amp giving you more headroom and clarity. Just keep in mind that you can over power them and smoke them.
