I received my cables in today and although I do not intend to run balanced line inputs to my Hifonics sub amp; I am stuck running it balanced for a while (another story).

I first powered up my SX-SL with my Ref 360.4 and my components sound great (further tuning to follow).

I hooked up the Hifonics bxi2610 and OUCH, alternator whine louder than you can possibly imagine. I swapped cables and checked gains and every other setting I could think of.

I installed an RCA adapter which came with the SX-SL and tried again. Alternator whine is now GONE.

Is there any other possible things I can check before I just say "the balanced input on the amp is garbage" ?

Alpine CDA-7893

Had a Interfire pre, all RCA with NO alternator whine at all. ZERO. When I hook up the balanced line to the Hifonics amp I get a HUGE whine. When I use an adapter for the balanced cable to RCA on the same Hifonics amp, ZERO whine.

Is that balanced cable universal for Zapco and Hifonics? The connector may be the same but they may have used a different pin-out configuration.

That is a very good question. In fact, I asked the same one here not long ago.

Symbilink and MX are two different technologies. Symbilink cable may work between hifo components. However they are not balancing together. Each has its own claim for balance.

Great, just like MAC & PC. haha

Thanks for the wisdom, I will get another RCA adapter and call it good (for now).
