2002 oem stereo pinout needed

Hello, I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup. Several months ago, my Daimler Chrysler truck stereo, P/N P56038589AL started to take a few seconds to change between AM and FM. The few seconds grew to be longer and longer until I would go without music for a couple of hours of driving. Then it stopped totally, except the clock still works.

I checked a bunch of things from ideas on the internet about a month ago and somehow it started working until I shut off the key and I haven't been able to get it going again. I tested all fuses under the hood as well as in the dash with a meter and they are okay. There is power at the two stereo fuses in the dash. I removed the stereo from the dash and metered the 22 pin connector for power. I have power at various points, but no power turns on and off with the ignition key which makes me think it is the wiring, not the radio. I don’t want to order a replacement radio and find out that the wiring is the problem. Various web sites on line have pin outs, but the wires on mine have different colours. I checked this site for the '02 and it showed the old 2 connector configuration. I checked it for the '03 and the connector looked right, but again the colours were different.

I am in Canada if it makes a difference. Here is what my pinout looks like, and again all power shown is constant.

There is also a tab for chassis ground, but no wire was connected to it.

Can anyone please provide a pinout so I can see if the stereo is actually defective?

Thanks for your reply.     The first three wires in your diagram are the same colours as mine, but the rest are different.      I'm not sure if I can assume they will do the same thing with my stereo.    If I can, then the #1 wire should be constant +12 for the memory which it is, and the #2 power wire power should be switched with the key, but it is constantly powered.   I didn't check to see if the #3 wire changed from -12v with the headlight dimmer, but the dimmer function of the radio works okay.

A friend told me last night that I should be able to use the pinout drawing for the 2003 Dakota from www.the12volt.com, because even though the colours don't all match, it does have the single 22 pin connector.     It is actually pretty close, but there are a few differences that make me doubt his theory.     I have an extra wire on pin 4.      That pinout shows #2 being the switched ignition wire like yours above, but since mine is constant +12v, wouldn't the stereo work with the key on or off?       The 2003 pinout also shows #'s 11 and 12 jumped and connected to chassis ground.     Mine had no ground wire on the radio body.     I just looked again to see if somehow that wire had disconnected itself and caused the problem, but there is no separate ground wire in the dash.

I think I'm going to need the exact pinout for my truck to check the stereo.   Thanks again, Paul B

what is the production date of your truck?

91stt,     The door says October 2001.     From what I've found online, Chrysler changed to the 22 pin connector part way through the 2002 production year.   Thanks, Paul B

So the wire harness has power where it should, except I still find it odd that the #2 RED / wht wire is hot at all times when it should only be hot if the key is on or in the accessory position.      It occurred to me that I might be able to check absolutely by switching in the stereo from my 2007 Grand Caravan.    One site that sells OEM stereos said their replacement unit would work in either vehicle.    Just to make sure, I found a pinout for the van online, but it was significantly different.    Now I'm not sure whether I should trust the compatibility info from the stereo dealer or the pinout for the van.     The12volt.com doesn't list a 2007 Grand Caravan stereo pinout.      Does anyone have this info for a van manufactured in 11/06?     On another note, I searched for replacement stereos online a few weeks ago and found a company that sold an OEM replacement for $70, but I didn't bookmark the site.     I think it was in Florida, and the site showed good photos of the front and back of each unit for sale.    Now, the cheapest I can find one is around $140.      Can anyone recommend a cheaper place to buy a replacement (if that is allowed on this forum)?   Thanks, Paul B
