My '96 Chevy Tahoe has a stock sterio in it. About 3 days ago the radio would suddenly fade out then explode to extremely high volume. I will power it off then back on at which time the speakers don't work. Now the speakers only work on a random basis. Is this a short? Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting? Thanks.

Use a volt meter to measure the voltage of each speaker wire at the radio. Each wire should measure about 6 volts DC. If you find one lower or higher, then you need to trace that circuit for a short to ground or 12 volts. If you have rear door speakers, then there is a separate amp for them under the driver's side dash.

Does your radio have a knob around the outside of the volume knob with SCV written on it? The SCV is not written on the knob, but silk screened around the outside of the knob. On the face of the radio.

Yes.. it sure does have the SCV. I purchased this SUV about 10 days ago and have yet to figure out what it does.

SCV = Speed Controlled Volume. I have seen 3 or 4 of these decks that do exactly what yours is doing. I am pretty sure the problem is the deck. We have replaced a couple of the decks and as far as I know they never came back saying that the problem was still there. If you do not want to replace the deck I would try cutting the VSS wire from the back of the deck. It uses the VSS wire to determine speed and it increases the volume accordingly. I have no idea if cutting the vss wire will fix your problem. But it may be worth a shot.
