hi guys, thanks in advance for a little advice. Maybe its just a mid-life crisis setting in, but its time to pick back up where i left off in the mid-90's!

What i have is a '99 saturn sl2. At the moment i'm using a Kenwood x993 deck, and dusted of the old orion amps. In the car now im using a 250hcca on a pair of orion CO122's in a cheap prefab box, and a 250sx running a set of Hifonics mx6's in the door.I have at my disposal an additional Orion 275sx. Using these cheap speakers to make sure the amps still function as thet should, and chase down the rattles. Sound damping is currently going in, and the doors look like they are gonna need a lot of help, sealing them in, dynamat, mdf mounting baffles for the speakers, ect.

My eventual plan is to run some vintage Soundstream DII amps in the future, as soon as i find a last D200II to go with the minty D60II's and D200II i already have. But that is for another day!

What i need help with is chosing a front stage. Im thinking i will utilize both sx amps with an active crossover. Beyond that, i have no real clue. (The brands that were killer back in "my day" seem to all have gone to crap. I remember when hifonics, Orion, Soundstream, ect was good equipment! And you didn't need 1.21 jiggawatts to be heard down the block.). I need some guys to reccomend some set-ups that are proven to work well. Im not going to get too worked up with brand names, or even insist that brands be matched between tweets and mids. All that matters is a decent  soundstage, something that can be discrete, and within a budget of $300 or so.

My music tastes are varied, one day it might be Buffet, Deicide the next.

I hope i have provied enough information for you guys to point me in the right direction.I'm doing this a step at a time, only working on the top-end for now, Lows will come later, for now  the cheap Orions will do the job.(but im finding it fun tellin the kids that it's only a 200 watt system, they all swear its MUCH bigger!)

and i know i should be hitting the stores to check things out "by ear" but im in a rual area, and the shops in Amarillo are full of kid salesmen selling off the rack components, tellin me how "banging" its gonna be...

thanks for your reccomendations

thanks for the idea! what line of jl's were you thinking of?

also keep in mind that this will be an active set-up, so i don't mind a lil mixing and matching, plus why pay for crossovers that i won't use anyway? im sure there are a few guys around that have done a little trial-and-error and found a "if it were my money..." combo!

I just installed a few Hifonics amps in a 69 gto convertible and they sounded great. I would not put them with crap. Features were adequate and has proven reliable for me. Remember autotek. Flashback to 1992
